The inaugural Kaleidoscope of Art and Design, a two-day conference that will begin on Monday 4 September 2017 at 6pm at the Nehru Centre, a cultural wing of The High Commission of India in London. KADLondon 2017 aims to highlight the intersectional nature of art, culture, and design by creating a platform for boundary-pushing creatives to share their experiences with the London art community.
This year’s keynote speaker is Indian-born artist and designer Smrita Jain. She will present her acclaimed photography project Creating Durga, a solo exhibition on Monday 4 September 2017. Based on her book of the same name, the exhibition will feature stunning, intimate images of step-by-step artisanal idol making during the famed Durga festival in her native India.
On Tuesday 5 September 2017 at 6pm, the conference will continue, involving presentations and a panel discussion about the intersection of international art and design.
Smrita Jain will begin the evening with her keynote on the Interaction between Art and Design and their value in Cultural Representation. Smrita’s featured works include, Ateem (a Hindi typeface), 3D typographic art, graphics-based advertising posters for Incredible India and her upcoming book, Fat Free Samosa. Each piece offers a different perspective and breaks stereotypical impressions of Indian culture.
The evening will also include presentations from curator, artist, and researcher Laura P. Garcia about Sonic Arts and Artistic Director of Milapfest, Alok Nayak speaking about Indian Musical Identity. The panel discussion will be introduced and moderated by Sylvie Gormezano, Director of Picture This Productions and Chair of the Board of the Association of Women Art Dealers.
